My very first try on painting flowers!
'TheLandscapePainter' brought this recreation from Lovell Speers, a Bill Alexander instructor, to my attention and I gave that one a try after some careful studying. Mr. Speers has more flowers painted then just poppies so I might have another go at something from him in the future.
Canvas used was a high quality 12"x16", prepared with liquid clear. Few colours were used here (cad yellow, bright red, orange, phthalo green, ivory black, T-white). This is not difficult yet not easy either. At least not easy for me since it is my very first flower creation on canvas with oils. Hardest part was to keep the petals somewhat distinghuised from each other within the same colour scheme. Fun part were the stems and the leaves.
Succes or not, I leave that up to you!
The idea behind creating/choosing this painting is rather special.
I moved to a new city end of 2016, living far more rural now and in an exceptional social neighbourhood (about 360 inhabitants). One of the citizens, a woman of 58 nicknamed 'Mamske' and multiple grandmother, has been diagnosed with MSA (Multiple System Atrophy, a very rare cerebreal disease) a few years ago. Her favourite flowers are poppies and also the logo of the Belgian MSA foundation is a poppie.
Hence my initiative to present her a poppies creation on Mothers' day to give some kind of support and hopefully to paint a smile on her face! Myself, I am a survivor of several lethal occurences so I know pretty well what that woman must feel and endure.
Wishing here the best with this creation!!
Hi, thank you so much TLP.!
You know, I thought of her SO much while painting this and worked real hard on it. For a first, I think it is very okay.
I only met that lady twice, due to her disease, but know her husband well, about the greatest guy of the municipality here! Also he will surely love this!
Great work! I especially enjoy the effect on the bottom leaves. Wonderful what you can create by loading the brush the right way
You DID it! Great Voy Kay! Great plesure to watch him working right? I also made one. The white poppy's . You can trust that your Mamske wil be very pleased with your criacion.
Dear Felix, yes, those stems and leaves did something special there. that was just a cad yellow loaded soft filbert brush, sliding downwards with speed through the background of phthalo green and black. Amazing effect that created!
Thanks for loving this, another challenge I took on and brought safely home!
Dear Dona, woonde je om de hoek en hadden we geen Corona dan kreeg je me daar een knuffel van me tot in de wolken!!
Yes, I noticed those white poppies and they are on the short list! I love those as well!! Lowell is okay to follow, I miss the better camera work from Bob though but it feels okay, no worries!
Mamske will get this on Saturday the 8th of May, when it has dried, just in time for Mother's day. I cannot forget to bring hankies (zakdoekjes) cause I will cry my eyes out from emotion!
Wow, they're beautiful!
Thank you Umagaan, for a first it was not bad at all. Hope to do a second one like this shortly!
Fantastic Start Voy! great you did it! I think you have this hidden talent and did not know yourself it existed!
ohhh my gosh, this is gorgeous!!!!! You need to paint more flowers!!!! What a very nice gift for Mamske & her Hubby!!!!!!
You are so sweet! I’m sure she will absolutely love this! I love the pop of color against the dark background. The steams and leaves really do look fantastic!
Dear Sunnylady, there is a lot of truth in what you stated. Often I detect hidden talents, as everybody else in the world does, and it never seizes to amaze me that certain things really go my way, others don't but that is life, is it not?
Till next one!
Hahaha, indeed Toadi, it is my intention to try a couple of more flower creations, thank you so much for loving this and appreciating the thought behind this creation. I can hardly wait till Sat the 8th of May, when I will surprise them with this (hopefully dried) creation!
Thanks so much for liking this Lilikens. Stems and leaves were so joyful to do. I wanted to do more but was so afraid to use paint thinner (for my scriptliner) since that would react with the liquid clear.
I intend to repeat this one but perhaps with blue colours iso red. Should be great also, right?
If you have a place where it is always hot (around 35-40C) it will speed up drying if there are thick paint layers. But overall I think it will dry on its own. It is almost a month ahead.
Indeed Sunnylady, that thought had crossed my mind as well. I will place it in our veranda, shielded from direct light of course, where it can easily be 30°C and more when the sun is out!
Thanks for reminding me!!
Question. So when it gets hot outside, should I put them in the garage where the sun doesn't shine? I am using a room where it is colder during the winter now, does that impede drying time?
Couldn't mention this earlier but some very sad news had occured two months ago.
Mamske past away, in peace and surrounded with her loving family.
MSA has no cure (yet) so she was always destined to loose that fight.
She fought with dignity and with the enormous love of her family to support her.
May she rest in peace and for those willing, please send her a small prayer, she would love that!
Voy Kay
